“The Power of Social Media” Webinar was a HUGE success (Posted on April 11, 2011)

We had a successful webinar on Wednesday (3/30) on “The Power of Social Media.” We would like to thank Amelia Silbert-Geiger from the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) for a fantastic webinar. She packed in a lot of information in such a short time! As Amelia mentioned to us after the webinar, she really could go on and on for weeks on the topic of Social Media.

We hope that this webinar provided the field with a lot of good information and resources that will help in the implementation of Social Media with tobacco control projects.
During the webinar we had a few questions, and we wanted to highlight them here. We also posted the questions and answers, along with the recorded webinar, PowerPoint slides and additional handouts in our “Get Trained” section of our website. You can find them under the “archived webinars” section.

If you have any questions, or you want to learn more, let us know!

Q: Where can we get the slides or webinar?
A: Yes, a copy of the slides, video links, handouts with additional information and the recorded webinar are all posted on: TEAM Lab Archived Webinars

Q: Do you know what happens if the ‘page’ creator changes after awhile, therefore necessitating a change in the email address? I know the page is directly linked to the email, so does Facebook allow you to change the actual email connected to the page?
A: You can change the email as long as it’s not being used by another Facebook profile. If you do have a Facebook page that you are the admin on, you can change over administrator and take yourself off completely. So if you have another person that can be admin, you can make them an admin, and drop yourself as admin. You don’t have to lose the Facebook fan page if you can’t be in charge of it anymore.

Q: What is the social media phone app that will allow us to connect someone to the “closest” whatever, e.g. anti-smoking event (it was an example given during the presentation of a tobacco retailer who provides a phone application as a social media tool)?
A: The phone application that was presented in this webinar was created by General Snus. This application will locate you via GPS and bring you to the nearest store that sells their tobacco. UPDATE: this application cannot be searched for in the iTunes App Store – once you register on the generalsnuc.com website, you click the mobile phone icon and the site will send you a link to download the app to your phone. There are no applications that we currently know of that can direct you to an anti-tobacco event. This is something that we should venture doing.

Q: Can you have an advanced seminar that talks more about how to use?
A: Yes! I would love to! Stay tuned for dates.

Q: Can you use Google Analytics to track Facebook fan pages? Or what other tools are available to track Facebook and Twitter for evaluation purposes?
A: Google Analytics can be used on Facebook fan pages in the HTML page, which is an application called “Static FBML.” However, in order for Google Analytics to track the traffic, users need to visit that page and it cannot be placed on the “wall.” To do this, it is important to direct users to a “landing tab” that you create using the “Static FBML,” which can be done through the “Edit Page” settings. Another tool for facebook evaluation is the “facebook insights,” which sends general information about “likes,” and “interactions.” It is still hard to track twitter engagement – there is no “twitter insights.” However, looking at the tweets you post that have been tweeted will help determine who is listening and responding to your updates. Also, if you use hashtags (#), you can get insight on when they are being used, how often, and by whom at www.hashtags.org and on twitter.com itself by simply searching the hashtag.
