The Cultural Competency Training hosted by CTCP was fantastic! (Posted on October 13, 2011)

The Cultural Competency training hosted by CTCP last week (Tuesday, October 4th) was not only informative, but it was also eye-opening.

Facilitated by Drs. Sue Brotherton and Juan J. Callejas from the National MultiCultrual Institute, cultural competency was highlighted throughout the training. Integrating cultural competency is relatively new to tobacco control. However, its application can help to bridge the priority populations with healthcare providers. The current overall smoking prevalence in California is 11.9% as of 2010. Surprisingly, the smoking prevalence in priority populations is still alarmingly high. By using the tactics of awareness, understanding, and action, the tobacco control realm can help to reduce the overall smoking prevalence in the priority populations.

It was a GREAT training!
