Concept: Our idea originated from jellyfish and current dresses that have implemented aspects of the jellyfish into the design as well as auxetic materials and structures. We wanted our design to implement both the free-flowing, elegant and astral nature of the jellyfish and the more harsh and geometric ideas found in auxetic material design. Our design was split into 3 parts with the top representing the bell of the jellyfish through its smooth yet somewhat hard feeling. Next was the auxetic waist which implemented texture and a rigid feel between the two jelly-fish like pieces, as well as mimicking coral reefs through its unique pattern. Lastly our flowing jelly strands was layered with two main designs and further with other material to create a chaotic yet beautiful piece which mimicked both the jellyfish’s tentacles and the seaweed and other items swirling around in the ocean deep. We utilized laser cutting for each of our 3 parts with a mixture of sewing, gluing and hand-cutting to attach the pieces together and create our final piece. Overall we feel our work mimics jellyfish in a unique and sustainably-focused way, implementing ideas of biomimicry, mayhem, and harmony into a cohesive and lively piece.
Reflections: Looking back at the process of the group project, we enjoyed learning first how to use the laser cutter and getting more comfortable with doing so over the project’s runtime. Further we learned a lot about using and combining materials (specifically fabrics) in the laser cutter, when hand-cutting and scoring and when sewing pieces together. This project allowed for each of us to grow in our own ways and perceive things differently from seeing fashion from the designer/creators perspective and not the consumer’s to understanding the movement of an object between 2-dimensions and 3-dimensions better than before. Overall the group aspect allowed for our different ideas to flourish and come together into something that shows off each of our unique perspectives in one cohesive piece.
