Thursday 24th August: This was day one of the meeting, where we as a group thought about the main laser cutting techniques, materials, and themes that we liked. We then added different laser-cutting designs and high fashion examples as sources of inspiration for our own project on Google Jamboard.

We ended up settling on a slip dress design with the addition of an overcoat piece which would make the overall outfit more dynamic. The two choices of clothing would also enable more opportunities for unique laser cutting techniques to be displayed. The photo above also demonstrates out ideas on where we would add certain cut and score details.

Today was an important day in turning initial ideas into more tangible designs. We purchased an outline/pattern of a slip dress online that aligned with our visions before experimenting with different colours and patterns for the design. We also decided to go with a coat/cape hybrid design for the outer layer instead for a more unique final product.
It was also helpful to see what a 3D printed fabric could look like.

During class time, it was the first test of the laser cutter.
In the first part of the class, we scaled down the life-sized human designs to fit the scale of a mannequin via Rhino. We measured the dress as 9 inches long and the coat/cape as 11 inches long.
Then we went down to the Maker Space where Jacob taught us how to use the Laser Cutter. We decided to print a prototype on the light green fabric of the dress and discovered that the scale of our dress was slightly too small for the mannequin. Then we went back and revised our design.

This evening we met up at the Maker Space and got our dress printed.

Today we printed our coat/cape on the black material, which involved scoring both the outline and patterns of the item. We decided to use scoring and an x-acto knife to cut out each part of the coat/cape rather than using the 3D printer to avoid unwanted cuts and burns on the detailed designs.
We also sewed all the necessary parts of the dress and cape together before glueing on the final details such as the white scored pattern.

Finally, after a couple weeks of brainstorming, researching, discussing, designing, cutting, scoring, sewing, and gluing, we came up with our final product- Eden.
