Inspiration: The concept of our design is based on the life cycle of a butterfly including the aspects of metamorphosis and the final transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Our design emulates nature with organic shapes and symbols of the world around us. The skirt represents the cocoon, and the torso pieces are symbolic of the extended wings of a Monarch butterfly. We used scoring, rastering, and cutting. For the butterfly wings, we used leftover wood and used cutouts. In terms of the skirt, we used all three laser cutting techniques to represent the layered cocoon.
Reflections: In reflecting on the process, we learned a lot about Adobe Illustrator and how to create designs that could successfully be printed on the laser cutter. We learned about scoring, rastering, and cutting, and how the different techniques produce different results on different fabrics/materials. Seeing the project come to life through the laser cutter was a cool experience, and we learned the importance of testing prints on the laser cutter with paper prior to printing on the final project material.
