Our Concept:
Our scanned object was a yeti water bottle. Because of its simple cylindrical shape, we decided to make our alterations into minimalistic and modern style furniture pieces.
First we decided to create a lamp with a simple, geometric style that reflected the modern, minimalistic feel we wanted for our designs. We altered the scan of the water bottle to act as the lamp shade, the inner vertical pole of the lamp, the shaft of the lamp, and a part of the base of the lamp. By scaling the water bottle’s cylinder shape, we were able to diversify its purpose and apply it to the lamp piece.
Then, we made a coffee table to place our lamp on, scaled to the mannequin and perfect to use as a living room centerpiece. We used the handle of the yeti water bottle to put unique, curved legs on the coffee table to align with our minimalistic and chic concept.
Next we have a chair designed with sharp and simple geometry to align with the style of modern furniture we were envisioning. For the chair, we used the scan of the water bottle to act as the legs of the chair. We then added the seat, back, and sides of the chair with different shaped meshes in blender.
Lastly, we decided to create a small table to provide our mannequin with a table that’s easy to just sit down and rest for a minute at. We wanted this table to accompany the chair as the coffee table wasn’t meant to be used with a chair. We made the choice to not make the handles of the water bottle scan visible and decided to place three legs to differentiate it from the chair. We then altered a spherical mesh in blender to act as the seat of the stool.
Our Process:
We initially scanned a frappuccino and wanted to create different bags by altering the scan, but we decided the scan would be too hard to alter and decided to try and scan a water bottle.
A challenge we faced was creating the scan itself. Although technology has advanced over the years, there were lighting requirements that we were not aware of. This led to 3d scan attempts of a fraction of the water bottle, or even the entire room itself. After getting advice in the AR room, we realized that natural lighting was probably our best bet.
After our failed attempts, we managed to get a good scan of a yeti water bottle and continued with an altered plan to make furniture instead.
We first brainstormed and printed the lamp design, then we moved on to designing and printing the rest of our pieces of furniture.
