Technology, Humanity and Society:
Educating All Engineers for the Future
April 13 – April 15, 2023
University of Southern California
Los Angeles, California
The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Pacific Southwest Section invites the submission of abstracts for papers, presentations, posters, workshops, and lightning talks for the 2023 ASEE-PSW Conference in Los Angeles, California on April 13-15, 2023. ASEE-PSW encompasses California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii.
This year’s theme is:
Technology, Humanity and Society:
Educating All Engineers for the Future
Engineering affects every aspect of society. Rapidly advancing technologies are impacting society in new and unforeseen ways. How can engineering educators equip a diverse group of students to create and engage with new technology, to build community, and to impact future societies in beneficial and ethical ways?
As with previous Section conferences, submissions on other topics relevant to engineering education will also be considered. A sample list of possible topics to get ideas percolating can be found below.
Possible Topics
Social Justice and Engineering Curriculum | Inclusive, Forward-Looking Teaching and Pedagogies |
• Diversity, equity, and inclusion • Underserved students (first generation and marginalized students) • Students’ mental health and wellbeing • STEM identify and belonging • Responsive and responsible teaching | • Course design • Peer mentoring • Capstone experiences • Classroom technology • Project-based learning • Assessment tools & techniques • Capstone experiences • Undergraduate research • Success and student organizations |
Preparing Students for Emerging Industries | Engineering and Society |
• Teaching professional skills • Sustainability • Issues around climate change • Responsible uses of AI • Engineering ethics • Virtual environments | • Community engagement • COVID impacts on students and faculty • P-12 STEM outreach • Recruitment and retention strategies for students and faculty |
The five possible presentation formats for this conference are described below. Please choose the appropriate option for each submission. As a hybrid conference, virtual presentation and participation will be possible in any of these formats. Works-in-Progress (WIPs) are welcome in any presentation format. Please see submission deadlines below.
1. Full Paper for Publication and Presentation
Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to follow up with a full paper. Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). Authors of accepted abstracts will present their work in a conference session and will be required to prepare a full paper (maximum 10 pages) for review prior to publication in the conference proceedings. For papers to be published in the conferenceproceedings at least one author must register and present. Full papers are also eligible for the section best paper competition; the winner advances to the zone level and, if successful, to the national level best paper competition. It is expected that the author(s) of a full paper submission will support the conference by reviewing one or more abstracts and papers submitted for the ASEE-PSW Conference.
2. Abstract-Reviewed Presentation
Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to prepare a presentation only (no full paper). Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). It is not required to follow up with a full paper in order to present in a conference session.
3. Abstract-Reviewed Poster
Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that you intend to prepare a poster only (no full paper or presentation). Submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and include, as appropriate, a clear description of the objectives and motivation, relevant background, assessment plan and results (if not a WIP). It is not required to follow up with a full paper in order to participate in the conference poster session.
4. Workshops
Please indicate in the first sentence of your abstract that this is a workshop proposal. Limit your workshop description to a maximum of 1000 words that clearly states the objectives, targeted audience, and learning outcomes, as well as activities planned and approximate length. Please indicate if participants need to bring supplies, such as a laptop.
5. Lightning talks
Please indicate in the first sentence of your short paragraph that this is a lightning talk proposal. A Lightning Talk is a very short presentation on a timely topic of interest to the audience. This year, we are hoping for a variety of talks on any number of subjects, including, but not limited to:
- Digital initiatives
- Partnerships
- Innovative pedagogy
- Or anything you think might be of interest to your peers. Talks are 2-3 minutes with just 1-2 slides, followed by a group discussion.
The main goals of this session are to learn what our colleagues are doing, and to generate discussions during the session and over the course of the meeting.
Format
The conference will be primarily in person but will support an online option for those who cannot attend in person. Please indicate your intended modality.
