Research Mission:

Engineer biological-electronic hybrid systems at the sub-cellular scale that enable closed-loop, multi-modal control of individual cells within complex tissues

Enabling Technologies:

  • Semiconductor and device technologies (Lead PI: Kapadia)
  • Top-down cell and tissue engineering (Lead PI: McCain)
  • Bottom-up gene and protein engineering (Lead PI: Morsut)

Applications:

  • Off-the-shelf platforms for non-destructive, real-time sensing and/or actuating of cellular phenotypes with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution
  • Tools for active and dynamic control of cell and tissue morphogenesis
  • “Smarter” implantable devices with enhanced real-time sensing and control
