CKIDS 2019 Summer Symposium

The CKIDS 2019 Summer Symposium was held on August 22, 2019.  Faculty and students presented interdisciplinary data science projects tackled over the Summer. Some were continuing projects from DataFest Spring 2019.

The meeting started with a brief presentation by CKIDS Director Yolanda Gil titled “A Summer of Data Science across Four Continents”.  She described her interactions with researchers in different countries that place a different emphasis in data science.  In London, she visited the Turing Institute located at the British Library.  She noted that the UK government is emphasizing data sharing to promote innovative collaborations between academia and industry.  The Turing Institute is a focal point for these interactions.  In Addis Ababa, she gave a presentation at the University of Addis Ababa about open science and reproducibility.  Data sharing has growing importance in Ethiopia, especially environmental and agricultural data that can lead to better management of natural resources and improved food security.  In Beijing she saw data science embedded in artificial intelligence projects.  She visited Tsinghua University, where an agreement with USC for a new dual degree in Communication Data Science was signed by representatives of both universities.  Back at USC at the end of the Summer, she was excited to see the truly interdisciplinary nature of the data science projects presented at the Symposium.

Below are the titles, students, and advisors of the projects presented at the Symposium.
