FAQs: University Housing

Last updated: April 8, 2020 at 6:39 pm

USC Housing Access

Our primary concern is your safety and well-being, and the safety and well-being of our employees and communities. We understand that some students, particularly given new travel restrictions, may need to remain in university housing. We will continue to provide housing, food and support for as long as you are in USC Housing, and USC Student Health will remain in operation to serve students. We are all here for you.

Those who remain in university housing must adhere to USC’s social distancing guidelines to help us protect our community. If you have any questions or concerns about your housing needs, please contact USC Housing at housing@usc.edu

Health & Safety Inspections: April 6-10

USC Housing will conduct health and safety checks during the week of April 6–10. All spaces will be entered by USC Housing staff looking for open food items and other perishables. Inspections will include all refrigerator and freezer units.

USC Housing staff will dispose of any open or perishable food items and clean any area that may have become soiled by a perishable item. This is necessary to ensure basic health and safety standards in the residential facilities.

Retrieving Your Belongings

Students who left university housing during spring break cannot return to campus to retrieve their belongings until we contact you with details for a safe and orderly process.

We know you have questions, especially about retrieving your personal belongings (which we are keeping safe and secure) and about pro-rated refunds for room and board (which we will provide). There are other pressing issues we must get to first, and we will return to these as quickly as possible.

If you have an immediate health or safety reason to access the residence hall, please contact USC Housing at housing@usc.edu or call the USC COVID-19 24-hour hotline at (213) 740-6291.

FAQS

The university plans to issue a pro-rata credit for housing and dining fees to students’ accounts, but we have not yet worked out the details or the process. We will announce further details later this semester and appreciate your patience as we develop the process and guidelines.

Most buildings, including the libraries, the bookstore and fitness/recreational facilities, will not be publicly accessible until further notice. Library resources and services are available online to assist with your studies and research. You can purchase items from the USC Bookstore online.

If you attempt to return to campus without prior permission, you will be turned away. We are keeping the rooms locked and your belongings safe. If you have an immediate health or safety reason to access the residence hall, please contact USC Housing at housing@usc.edu or call the USC COVID-19 24-hour hotline at (213) 740-6291. We know you want your belongings, and we will find a safe way to arrange this, but for now we need you to wait and be patient.

Residence halls may only be accessed by residents who have received permission to stay and have remained on campus. For health and safety reasons, no guests nor students seeking to return after having traveled during spring break will be granted access to residence halls. We need every resident to take this seriously. Failure to do so could result in a student conduct action.

We encourage any student who needs support to reach out to USC Campus Support & Intervention.

The orders from city, county and state officials allow USC to continue to perform essential functions to support on-campus residents, online and remote learning; the expectation is to eliminate as much activity as possible on and off-campus. The community spread of COVID-19 warrants more stringent measures of social distancing and disease prevention, and we now need to find a long-term housing solution that both works for each of the students and significantly reduces the numbers of students still living in university housing.

In alignment with public health measures, students may have changes in room assignments to maintain better social distancing.

During this global health crisis, our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our students, employees and communities. Many of our students who live off-campus in non-university housing have reached out with questions. To assist, we responded to some frequently asked questions regarding students’ rights and responsibilities in light of the current COVID-19 outbreak. Please see our non-university housing FAQs.
