FAQs: Organized Events and Cancellations

Last updated: April 8, 2020 at 6:39 pm

On March 16, Los Angeles County issued the Safer at Home order prohibiting events and gatherings of 10 or more people, which is currently valid through April 19. In conjunction, USC is taking a proactive approach to slowing the potential transmission of COVID-19.

The university extended its moratorium and prohibited all university-sponsored on- and off-campus events through May 1.

Any event that is organized, sponsored or funded by the university, USC students, faculty, staff, schools, departments, units or a university sponsor.

This is unlikely. Non-university-related events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and USC Hotel — along with some USC Hospitality events — will be reviewed based on CDC recommendations and state and city guidelines. To date, no events have been approved to move forward.

Yes. The cancellations include on-campus and off-campus events, indoor and outdoor.

No. Student organization events and activities including collegiate club sports practices, competitions, rehearsals and events on campus and off campus, are canceled.

Organizers are asked to move their meetings to the video and audio conferencing platform Zoom.

Yes.

Refund requests should be submitted to the department, venue or service provider supporting your event.

Tabling is suspended through May 1.

Organizers are encouraged to consider postponing or canceling events through the end of the semester. View more information.

If you choose to proceed with event planning, you must register for a permit. If you have already applied for an event permit there is no need to re-apply.

Additional forms required for event planning, along with guidance for organizers, can be found here.

Most buildings, including the libraries, the bookstore and fitness/recreational facilities, will not be publicly accessible until further notice. Library resources and services will be available online to assist with your studies and research. You can purchase items from the USC Bookstore online.

While key-card access will still be available for those who are required to be in the office for work or research, we emphasize the need to exercise social distancing and hygiene in every location.

USC Hospitality will remain open to provide food options, but in a reduced capacity. Please check USC Hospitality's hours of operation for the latest information.

The Pac-12 (as well as other Power 5 conferences) have announced the cancellation of all athletics competitions until further notice, and the NCAA announced the cancellation of all winter and spring championships.

The USC Athletics department has suspended all practices, camps and clinics, as well as all on and off campus recruiting and recruiting-related travel, until further notice.

We have decided to postpone but not eliminate all USC in-person commencement 2020 activities. Given that our commencement is scheduled for May 15, an in-person commencement at that time won’t be possible. We are urging people to cancel travel plans and other arrangements they have made in order to attend commencement on that date.

Here is what we are thinking for commencement 2020: To begin, we will hold a virtual conferring of degrees in May — comprised of a series of online events and speakers — and, we will make sure you receive your diplomas by mail.

We plan to have an in-person, on-campus celebration that will take place once travel and large group events become safe and permitted. Firm plans for the on-campus event will not be possible until more is known about the advance of the pandemic. We will continue to be in communication about this in the coming weeks and are determined to make this happen.
