RESEARCH SUMMARY
Dr. Shahabi has studied geospatial data analysis for more than 20 years and is mainly known for his contributions to spatial indexing, geospatial information integration, participatory sensing, geo-social environments, location privacy, and ridesharing. Moreover, he pioneered fundamental concepts such as road network queries, spatial skyline queries, and spatial crowdsourcing. His most recent research is on trajectory and location data analysis, focusing on bias, fairness, and privacy issues. Shahabi has applied his research to many applications with societal impacts, such as in transportation (e.g., routing and traffic forecasting), healthcare (e.g., pandemic control and prevention), medicine (e.g., oncology and cardiology), policy (e.g., geospatial decision making), urban planning (e.g., sustainability), and environmental sciences (e.g., pollution management. His research has been funded by several agencies such as NSF, NIJ, NASA, NIH, DARPA, AFRL, IARPA, NGA, and DHS, as well as several industries such as Chevron, Cisco, Google, HP, Intel, Microsoft, NCR, NGC, and Oracle. ). The developed technology has been transferred to various stakeholders such as JPL, NGA, and LA-Metro and resulted in two startups.
