The first and only adult epilepsy center in Central CA admitted its first patients into the EMU in 2018. This event was covered by local media and widely acknowledged as a significant improvement in the public health dimensions of epilepsy in the region. Working with local neuroradiologists, advanced epilepsy imaging protocols has been developed. In addition, the very first epilepsy surgeries were conducted at Kern Medical with great success. As the program developed the Kern program benefited from the support of all the Consortium centers, with USC Keck providing the most support. Community outreach has been greatly catalyzed by the new Kern Epilepsy Center. Working with other members of the USC Epilepsy Consortium, the Kern Epilepsy Center and Epilepsy Foundation hosted an Epilepsy Workshop for patients, the first such event ever in the Central Valley. Finally, within one year of admitting the very first patient into its EMU, the Kern Epilepsy Center achieved NAEC Level 3 designation.
