Alternative breaks

The various Alternative Break (AB) programs provide opportunities for students, staff and faculty to delve into pressing issues outside of the Los Angeles area, through service learning and volunteerism. The trips vary each year due to student interest, communities’ needs, budgets and other factors; in the past, the trips have included sites such as San Francisco, Peru and Guatemala.

JEP

Joint Educational Project (a.k.a. “J-E-P”) offers a wide range of service and service-learning opportunities in nearby schools, community-based organizations, health-care facilities and legal clinics. All of JEP’s programs combine hands-on experience with reflective practice, enabling students to learn first hand about the critical issues facing the communities surrounding USC.

Keck School of Medicine of USC

Keck Hospital of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital welcome dedicated volunteers to join the work they do to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. Volunteers are considered the hospitals’ ambassadors to the community and get opportunities to be part of the many aspects of the hospital operations.

Kicks for Kids

Kicks for Kids is a service organization dedicated to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for children with special needs in the greater Los Angeles area. Through weekly soccer games, USC volunteers strive to establish meaningful bonds between children with developmental disabilities in the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place where young people can participate in programs that expand their horizons and practice skills that will help them succeed. Volunteers are invited to join programs and be role models for kids in the local community.

Mayor’s Volunteer Office

The Mayor’s Volunteer Corps is composed of Angelenos who work together in service opportunities that result in long-term change. By joining the Mayor’s Volunteer Corps, volunteers commit a minimum of three volunteer days a year to engage in meaningful opportunities to make Los Angeles a better place. Volunteer opportunities address a wide range of community matters, including veteran issues, homelessness and environmental justice.

SCathlic Youth Initiative: Tutoring and Coaching

The goal of the SCatholic Youth Initiative Program is to strengthen the academic achievement and personal growth of at-risk, inner-city students, through the provision of community volunteers in a safe and supportive environment while also helping college students grow closer to Christ through encounters in service. Activities include tutoring, coaching and other extracurricular activities such as robotics, gardening, academic decathlons, etc.

Tutoring with High School Students

Located right across the street from USC, tutors can tutor middle school and high school students at the 32nd Street School! Tutors provide homework help, standardized test preparation, and guidance transitioning into high school or applying to college. The 24th Street Theatre is a nonprofit organization that uses art as a tool with which to positively impact the local and global community. Volunteers get to be involved in a variety of ways, including setting up events and assisting in managerial tasks.
