Research

Located at the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology at USC HSC, the Han Lab is at the forefront of research into head and neck cancers. Our mission is to drive innovative research that elucidates the underlying mechanisms of these cancers and to develop targeted therapies that improve patient outcomes. We focus on the following key research areas:

1. HPV Polymorphisms and Throat Cancer: Our research investigates the genetic variations of human papillomavirus (HPV) and their roles in throat cancer progression. We aim to identify specific HPV polymorphisms that influence cancer susceptibility and outcomes, enhancing our ability to tailor prevention and treatment strategies

2. Mechanisms of HPV Oncogenes in HPV-Related Throat Cancers: We are studying the molecular actions of HPV oncogenes, such as E6 and E7, in the pathogenesis of throat cancers. Our research focus on how these genes disrupt cellular processes like cell cycle control and programmed cell death, paving the way for cancer development. Furthermore, we are investigating the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) within the tumor microenvironment and their impact on the course of cancer spread. CAFs can alter the tumor environment, promoting invasiveness and resistance to therapy, thus playing a crucial role in the progression of the disease. Understanding these interactions provides critical insights into potential therapeutic targets to inhibit the spread of cancer.

3. Progression of Thyroid Cancer Related to BRAF Mutations: Our laboratory delves into the implications of BRAF mutations in thyroid cancer. We examine how these genetic changes affect signaling pathways within cancer cells, seeking innovative therapeutic targets to manage and potentially reverse tumor growth.

4. Perineural Invasion in Head and Neck Cancers: We investigate the complex phenomenon of perineural invasion, which contributes significantly to the aggressiveness of head and neck cancers. Our research aims to understand the interactions between cancer cells and neural pathways to develop interventions that prevent cancer spread and improve treatment efficacy.

5. Microbiome in Head and Neck Cancers: Our newest area of research examines the interactions between cells infected with HPV and the adjacent microbial environment, including bacteria, fungi, and Proteus species. Understanding how the microbiome influences cancer cell behavior and immune responses could unlock new preventative and therapeutic strategies that leverage these microbial interactions.

At the Han Lab, we are committed to multidisciplinary collaboration, leveraging the latest in technological advancements and a broad network of global experts. Together, we are dedicated to unlocking the mysteries of head and neck cancers and achieving breakthroughs that significantly impact clinical practice.
