IPSI Lab Coordinator

Dr. Jennifer Tanaka practices at the Keck Hospital of USC and is the director of clinical physical therapy in the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. She is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as a neurologic clinical specialist. She is a member of the neurologic academy of American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Tanaka is a mentor for the USC/RLANRC Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program.

Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy
IPSI Interventionist and Research PT

Amelia Cain is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. She completed her Neurologic Residency at the University of Southern California and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, her DPT at the University of North Carolina in 2020, and received her BS in Neuroscience at The Ohio State University in 2017. Amelia is interested in patient-centered rehabilitation for those who have suffered a neurologic injury, with a particular focus on motor learning, mindset, and the translation of research to clinical practice. She will be beginning in the Biokinesiology PhD program at USC in Dr. Kristan Leech’s lab in August 2023.

Tanisha Gunby is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of California Los Angeles. She joined the Motor Behavior and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory in June 2022 as an undergraduate student research assistant. She is interested in a career relating to research and education in Psychology and Health Sciences.

Julie Schwertfeger, Ph.D., DPT, MBA, CBIST

Dr. Schwertfeger completed her Ph.D. in Interprofessional Healthcare Studies at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine in May 2020 after completing her dissertation defense for “Community Coping Interventions after Stroke: A Pragmatic Cohort Study using Participatory Action Research”. Her teaching and research are focused on neurologic structures and processes underlying physical activity, wellness, and participation for people who survive acquired brain injury and their caregivers with an emphasis on interventions that target executive functions and self-management.
