Actuated Sensing & Communication Networks

Funded by NSF, ONR, RAE (Swedish NSF)

Sensor networks have been persistently studied over the last twenty years.  Modern technology has dramatically changed the architecture of these networks.  Future networks are envisioned to be comprised of many nodes with heterogeneous capabilities and requirements.

A major change is the inclusion of mobility. We are considering actuated sensor networks for both underwater (gliders, seabed nodes, submersibles, etc.) and terrestrial (drones, mobile base stations, Internet-of-Things devices) networks.  Thus, in addition to being able to control resources such as power, complexity, bandwidth, etc., we can also consider location as a control.  Thus, one may wish to change location to improve target detection or to improve the communications channel.
