We started at USC in Aug 2019, and are working to establish partnerships for outreach activities. We will share the news as each event occurs, stay tuned!
Want to help build an online platform for graduate education and make it accessible to everyone? Check out our YouTube Channel “Surviving and Thriving in Higher Education“.
What is this Channel and Why we started it?
“Surviving and Thriving in Higher Education” was pioneered by Maral Mousavi in 2016 to facilitate accessibility of training and mentoring for junior scientists. This YouTube Channel is open to public and it provides an online resource for graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior scientists to navigate their path and learn from the experiences of others. Faculty members and scientists in the fields of STEM are invited to share their tips on developing a successful career. We have presentations in 3 categories of technical skills, soft skills, and health in higher education. We have about 19,000 subscribers and more than 700,000 views, and videos on many topics.
Mission: Teaching, mentoring, and training the next generation of scientists is crucial for sustainably advancing the scientific community. Online interactive resources such as videos are extremely powerful for this purpose.
Students in higher education are trained in science, but not everyone receives enough guidelines on skills that are required to foster a successful career in science. In graduate studies, students face so many surprises and struggles that simply can be avoided or managed much better. Research advisers have limited time and availability, students might not get a chance to learn these skills directly from their mentors. We can help by providing online mentorship through our video clips, these videos are open to everyone, can be accessed anytime of the day, and students can use it as a complementary tool to learn from world-leading scientists whom they might never get a chance to meet directly. We believe that this Channel will particularly assist the students in resource-limited settings. See an example below.
Getting Involved: We want to firstly thank you for your interest in this project, we hope to make the best use of everyone’s time, and provide a resource that is available to all students and scientists across the world. We have just started and we could use your help! Please contact Maral Mousavi for guidelines on how to help.
