The Keck School of Medicine’s graduate certificate in narrative medicine introduces learners to the foundational principles and methods of the field. They will cultivate the tools and skills to recognize and respect the culturally informed narratives that individuals use to understand themselves. Students will be trained in methods of close reading, attentive listening, and reflective writing in the service of professional development and civic outreach. In order to enhance their appreciation of the complex ways stories work, students will select from two tracks: Creative Writing or Workshop Facilitation.
Students who complete the Certificate in Narrative Medicine will:
- Develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to bear witness to the experiences and stories of others.
- Employ close observation, deep listening, and reflective writing in clinical, professional, and community settings.
- Address important healthcare and social justice issues affecting Los Angeles and beyond.
- Build a diverse and collaborative community of professionals with expertise in narrative medicine methods, principles, and values.
