I originally wanted to pay homage to my hometown of Colorado by creating a scarf with mountain sewed into it. That being said, after failing to be able to create a single mound on the knitting machine after three tries, I decided to switch gears. I tried thinking of other things that make me feel love like the idea of home does — warmth, comfort, relaxation — and how I could include these into my scarf. Instead of focusing on a literal representation of love, I tapped into the other senses of touch and smell. To incorporate these senses into the scarf, I added lavender and lentils into the scarf. Lavender has always brought me a sense of comfort and relaxation, and the addition of lentils made the scarf heavy (similar to a weighted blanket) which provided an additional feeling of comfort.
I wanted the scarf to feel like one of those hugs you get from someone that you think about for hours after, warm, comforting, loving.
