Red Envelope

I switched my project from creating paper puppets to CNY red envelope – Happy CNY everyone! In the beginning, I was very excited about the idea of creating paper puppets because its something that bought me joy when I was young. However, making the circuits work with the puppets light up with the hugging motions was difficult and it was a bit time-consuming since this project is due in a week.

So I decided to shift gears to something more current and relatable to me, red envelopes for CNY. Something that I receive every year from my family that brings me joy. I can use the money to purchase what I want. In addition, this year is a little more special to me because it is the year of the tiger and I was born in the year of the tiger.

I started with creating an envelope template on Adobe Illustrator and drafted what I want this red envelope to look like. The red envelop will light up when the receiver holds it. The sensor input is tap touch. I wanted to spice it up a little bit by creating a push movement from the coins to the paws and it will show the hidden tiger under the paw.

I used construction papers to create the red envelope. I used thicker paper for the pushing movement because the regular construction paper is not strong enough for the pull and push motion.

I want the users to feel surprised when the red envelope lights up. I feel like adding something a little more special than a regular red envelope can bring extra joy to the user. In addition, this is also something they can keep as a decoration or a memoir for this special occasion with their family every year.
