Angry Utensils-Erin

While exploring the emotions of anger, I was particularly interested in the idea of anger and how it is impacted by inconsistencies. The idea I landed on was to make utensils or objects that would hinder everyday activities. I decided to create unusable silverware because we use these on a daily basis.

First I casted a long sheet of silicone. With this open sheet, I carved out the different silverware shapes to create a fork, spoon, and knife.

I decided to do it this way instead of creating a mold because I was not sure of the exact size and shape I wanted to make it.

From there, I made 3 handle tubes and inserted the silicone pieces attached to a stand. I then mixed concrete and poured them into the tubes. This reminded me of dangling string in sugar water to make rock candy. In the same way, I used a cardboard slot to hold the pieces in place and make sure the pieces stayed centered.

The final product:

In the end, I did not intend to have such jagged handles. I wanted to create more rectangular and pointy handles so that it was hard to hold. I liked the mistake of because it added more of an uncomfortable aesthetic.

Although I set out to make a product that left the user angry, I found it very interesting that most users found other emotions from the object. Many people said that the objects were really fun to use but very impractical. I’m not one to make any products that would inconvenience people so it was nice to see that people got something else out of it.
