Research Assistantship

We are seeking Research Assistants to contribute to research efforts on projects aiming to decrease nicotine use behaviors through innovative brief online and mobile-based interventions with young adults. There will be multiple opportunities to collaborate with researchers across the University of Southern California; primarily, with researchers in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences and the Institute for Addiction Science.

Research Assistantships are available on a volunteer basis. Qualified students within USC and at other institutions, including recent graduates, are welcome to apply.

We prioritize assistantships to students who are interested in committing to:

  • At least one semester of volunteering
  • 6-8 hours of volunteering per week and attending weekly lab meetings

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with participant online recruitment and retention
  • Conduct eligibility screening interviews with participants over the phone
  • Track survey completion rates and send follow-up and reminder texts/emails to participants
  • Create and manage study materials, including online recruitment ads
  • Build and test surveys in Qualtrics (web-based data collection tool)
  • Perform comprehensive literature reviews on emerging topics related to substance use, especially nicotine use, and contribute to the preparation of peer-reviewed manuscripts (opportunities for significant publications)
  • Data wrangling: transforming raw data to appropriate data formats for analysis

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong writer in APA style
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications (however, we are happy to provide training in these areas):

  • Familiarity and experience using online survey software (e.g., Qualtrics)
  • Computer competency and knowledge of data cleaning
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and using data analysis software (e.g., SPSS)
