The USC Student Health Insurance Office would like to remind you of upcoming deadlines and requirements for the next academic year.
The waiver portal for confirming enrollment in, or waiving, the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP, provided through Aetna) is now open:
If you have your own insurance plan that you will be using, and do not want to be enrolled in USC SHIP, you must request a new waiver by September 8, 2023.
ABOUT THE INSURANCE REQUIREMENT / AUTO-ENROLLMENT / STUDENT HEALTH FEE
The University of Southern California requires that all students have comprehensive health insurance. Students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP, provided through Aetna). The insurance charge will appear on your upcoming semester’s tuition statement.
The Student Health Fee, the semesterly fee that also appears on your tuition statement, covers all services provided directly through USC Student Health. This includes community and public health programs; COVID-19 screening and testing; individual primary care and illness/injury medical visits; short-term individual mental health counseling and group therapy; skill-building workshops and outreaches on sleep, anxiety, consent and healthy relationships; all provided through TeleHealth and in person appointments.
Please note: TeleHealth clinical visits for medical and mental health care are limited to individuals currently residing in California. Workshops, outreaches, and programs are open to all students regardless of geographic location.
ONLINE DEGREE STUDENTS, STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR LESS THAN 6 UNITS
• Note for students in online degree programs (degree programs that are not offered as in-person courses during regular circumstances) and students registered in less than 6 units: you may opt-in for eligibility under the Student Health Fee. To opt-in for the Student Health Fee please submit this form.
WHAT INSURANCE COVERS
Insurance programs cover the cost of care outside of the services of USC Student Health, including urgent care visits and emergency room visits, long-term counseling, surgeries and hospitalizations, and prescription medications.
VOLUNTARY INSURANCE ENROLLMENT (“Opt In” to SHIP)
For students carrying less than 6 units.
You may choose to enroll in SHIP. Please note the September 8, 2023 deadline. Please note that at any time during the semester, if the number of units you are registered in drops below 6 units, you will need to contact the health insurance office or you may be automatically dropped from insurance coverage.
To enroll in SHIP (purchase the insurance plan): complete your positive enrollment online. The cost of coverage will be added to your student account with the University.
DENTAL INSURANCE
Optional for all USC students, annual enrollment, please note the September 8, 2023 deadline.
Students have the option to enroll in the Optional Student Dental plan, by Sept. 8. if dental insurance is needed.
