I am on the “teaching faculty” here at Viterbi and, in that role, most of my time is to be spent on teaching and I do not have a budget or significant time for pursuing research activities. However, every semester, I work with a small number of students in the ISE MS Analytics program. Please note that I do not do directed research in the summer session. Please see other pages on this website for descriptions of my current ongoing research projects.
This research is very “applied” and is generally targeted at investigating recent and evolving trends in the analytics industry as well as researching more deeply topics that are not typically covered in the 500-level ISE classes. If you are interested in doing research to prepare for applying to PhD programs in the future, you would be better suited working with one of our tenure/tenure-track faculty members on their research teams (you can find a list of them along with their bios here: ISE Faculty Profiles).
This work is typically done for directed research credit (ISE-590) for one or two credits, but it can also be done on a “volunteer” basis. I give priority to students who wish to do it for ISE-590 credit and I generally only take students in their third or fourth semester in our MS program. Note that those doing the research for ISE-590 credit will need to pay tuition for the credits. Unfortunately, as a teaching faculty member, I don’t have funding for research activities. I will make decisions on the selection of students for the upcoming semester about two weeks before the start of the semester.
If you wish to apply to do this type of research in the upcoming semester, please send me an email with as much relevant information about your background and interests as possible (include your resume). Specifically, I am interested in the following information:
- What was your undergraduate major?
- Which classes have you taken thus far in your MS analytics program?
- Which classes have you taken with me?
- Which research project do you want to join?
- Do you want to do this for ISE-590 credit or on a volunteer basis? If it is for credit, do you want to do it for one or two credits?
