Development of novel MR techniques for brain tumor imaging

Brain tumors stand out among other cancers due to their potential for enduring and life-altering effects on a patient’s physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being. Dr. Fan’s lab has dedicated a significant amount of effort to developing advanced MR techniques that can provide multiparametric information for comprehensive brain tumor evaluation.

We recently developed an MR multitasking-based dynamic imaging for cerebrovascular evaluation (MT-DICE) technique for simultaneous quantification of permeability and leakage-insensitive perfusion with a single-dose contrast injection and one 7.6-min scan. MT-DICE uses a 3D Cartesian acquisition with segmented multi-echo FLASH readouts, which provides vascular permeability and hemodynamic perfusion maps with potentially reduced image distortions. The temporal resolution as high as 1.2 s is achieved without the compromise in the spatial resolution or coverage. Based on dynamic T1/T2* mapping, MT-DICE provides more accurate estimations compared to the conventional linear approach.
