Summer Gifted Institute (SGI) is an annual event held each summer by USC and led by Dr. Sandra Kaplan and a team of faculty members experienced in gifted education, instruction, and curriculum design. This institute provides current K-12 teachers with newly designed differentiated curriculum units responsive to both the Common Core and GATE Standards. Teachers will have the opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEU’s).
For 2024, the Summer Gifted Institute focuses on translating rhetoric into practice in an online seminar. We will explore alternative practices and theories to rethink gifted education in order to recognize and respond to the diversity among advanced and gifted learners. Participants will engage in learning experiences on the following topics:
- - standards related curriculum and instructional practices translated into differentiated experiences that spill-over to affect the gifted and all students in the classroom
- - intellectual equity translated into diverse teaching and learning practices
- - scholarship versus scholarliness to emphasize learning-to-learn practices
The three-day webinars will be held June 18-20.
Three-Day Summer Gifted Institute Cost: $300.00

What are CEUs?
- Issued by the USC Rossier School of Education, CEUs are recognized nationwide as a standard measurement of an individual's continuing education activity.
- CEUs serve as permanent documentation of your professional development coursework.
- CEUs are NOT USC courses or graduate credits.
What are the benefits of CEUs?
- CEUs are a means of documenting the amount of professional development hours and/or training that you have acquired.
- CEU units are tied directly to the high-quality workshops, conferences, seminars, and certificate programs offered by the University of Southern California.
- USC CEU credits are approved through instruction, direction, and evaluation by qualified University faculty members.
- You will need to check with your school district to see if they accept USC CEUs in place of salary points/credits. For your reference, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) accepts CEUs, issuing one LAUSD salary point per three CEUs.
How much do CEU's cost?
- For this seminar, you are eligible to receive a maximum of one and a half (1.5) CEUs. There is a processing fee of $35 per CEU.
How do I apply?
- You will need to complete the CEU Request Form and submit it with your curriculum project no later than one week after the end of each session.
- If you are paying by check, you will need to make the check payable to “University of Southern California.”
- If you are paying by credit card, you will need to provide your credit card number and expiration date on the CEU Request Form.
- After we have confirmed that you have completed ALL seminar requirements (curriculum project, reflection essay, web forum postings) following the requirement deadline, we will forward your request form and payment along with confirmation of your seminar completion to the USC Rossier School of Education, and a USC CEU transcript will be issued and sent to your home address.
