- Johns Hopkins Medicine: With its headquarters in Baltimore and one of the top-ranked medical schools in the nation, Johns Hopkins has six academic and community hospitals, more than 40 patient care sites, four suburban health care and surgery centers, and a home care group. Each year, They recieve around 4 million patients and 325 thousand ER visits. Annually its community physicians have more than 902 thousand patients and its home care program takes care of 160 thousand Central Maryland residents.
- University of Maryland Health System: As part of the state’s flagship college, the University of Maryland, this system is based out of Baltimore. The system still acts as a private employer, being one of the largest in Maryland that has more than 29,000 employees with 4,600 physicians being affiliated. It has 13 hospitals and over 150 locations that support residents from locations of all types (urban, suburban, and rural). Overall, the system comprises 25% of Maryland’s hospital-based care.
- MedStar Health: MedStar serves residents in both Maryland and the neighboring Washington D.C. They have 10 hospitals and ambulatory/urgent care centers that consist of 30,000 associates and 6,000 affiliated physicians. Its research institute is national-renowned and MedStar has an affiliation with Georgetown University. In 2017, it had 176,561 total inpatient admissions and observation stays, 4,643,474 total outpatient visits, and had a net operating revenue of $5.53 billion.
In the Commonwealth Fund’s 2020 Scorecard, Maryland’s status is indicated. They have said yes to Medicaid Expansion to cover more individuals in their state. Within Maryland, access, affordability, avoidable hospital use/cost, and healthy lives are all above average compared to the average in the U.S. while they are below average for prevention, treatment, and disparities.

- Medicare: In 2018, enrollment went over one million, but only 11% have Medicare Advantage plans whose availability goes from 1 to 23 plans. They have Medigap plans that act as a supplement for the original Medicare plan. The average per enrollee spending for Medicaid is at $10,115 which is around the same as the national average at $10,096.
- Medicaid: In the Kaiser Family Foundation report in October 2019, it underlines New Jersey’s Medicaid status. With a population of 5.9 million at the time, 19% are less than 200% below the federal poverty line, and 18% of the population is covered by Medicaid & CHIP. As stated previously, they have agreed to Medicaid expansion which lead to 306,700 adults to be joined as part of this expansion group. Overall, the total New Jersey Medicaid spending is at $11.5 billion with 45% of that being for managed care services.
