Fostering person and data-driven evidence to counteract maternal health disparities surrounding substance use during pregnancy, particularly among BIPOC people who are pregnant.
Our Research
The Maternal Cannabis Lab at the University of Southern California is supported by National Institute of Health, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities as well as the USC Institute of Preventive Research and USC Institute of Addiction Science to advance understanding of cannabis use experience and related health disparities during pregnancy.
Our studies include qualitative and mixed-methods work to engage with pregnant individuals and their healthcare providers to explore individual, interpersonal, and societal influences. We assess factors such as patient care and caregiving experience, cannabis use patterns, beliefs and meaning-making surrounding cannabis, and opportunities to improve maternal health.
Our ultimate goal is to better understand cannabis and pregnancy to enable healthy, equitable, and compassionate experiences for all pregnant individuals.
