There are a few different kinds of emergency contraception. The best kind for you depends on a few factors — when you had sex, your weight, and what kind is easiest for you to get.
There are certain IUDs you can get within 120 hours (five days) after having unprotected sex. This is the most effective type of emergency contraception. These IUDs work as well on day one as on day five.
Emergency contraceptive pills are effective within 3-5 days of unprotected sex. The earlier you take it, the more likely it is to be effective. Body weight makes a difference in the effectiveness of this method, be sure to know the weight guidelines for the type of pill you are accessing.

How can I get it?
Emergency contraception pills are dispensed through retail pharmacies, including USC Pharmacies on the campuses. It is available at moderate cost ($21.89, retail price to customer without using insurance) at USC Pharmacies.
They are also available at the vending machines in USC Village (by the elevator banks to the parking garages); in Royal Street Parking Garage; and in Seaver Hall (Health Sciences Campus).
Since January 2002, California law has permitted individuals to obtain emergency contraception from a pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription, sometimes called “behind-the-counter” access. This means you can get it from pharmacies without seeing a medical provider.
Its wide availability without a prescription also means it is available through number of quick turnaround delivery services.
Can I used my insurance?
In order for your purchase to be covered by insurance (no out of pocket cost), it does need to be prescribed. Medical providers can prescribe emergency contraception, and in California, pharmacists can also prescribe emergency contraception.
