The Collective Impact Framework
Collective impact is a network of community members, organizations, and institutions who advance equity by learning together, aligning, and integrating their actions to achieve population and systems-level change.
5 Strategies to Advance Student Wellbeing at USC:
-
- Ground the work in data and context, and target solutions
- Focus on systems change, in addition to programs and services.
- Shift power within the collaborative.
- Listen to and act with community.
- Build equity and leadership and accountability.
When paired with the original “5 conditions” of collective impact (Kania and Kramer, 2011), these equity strategies contribute to an approach that when implemented with focus holds great promise for improving outcomes for those who are most marginalized and oppressed in our communities. These communities are and should be the center of our work.

USC Well-being Collective
The USC Well-being Collective was created as a shared responsibility towards a common goal of strengthening a culture driven by student wellbeing. This goal is supported by four interrelated strategic goals:
-
-
- Equity and Inclusion – enhancing the culture of equity and inclusion
- Resilience and Thriving – creating a culture where individuals and communities thrive
- Alcohol and Other Substance Use – disrupting the culture of at-risk substance use
- Consent and Healthy Relationships — foster a culture of consent and healthy relationships
-
How We Got Here
The USC Well-being Collective was founded on the understanding that university-wide problems – and their solutions – arise from the interaction of numerous departments, academic units, and student organizations within larger systems of the university. The USC Well-being Collective works to align efforts across the university to transform the student experience and strengthen a culture driven by student wellbeing.
Since 2017, the Division of Student Affairs and Student Health have worked in coordination to assemble the USC Well-being Collective which consists of various units across the university whose leadership can make USC a better place to live, work, and learn using a systems-wide settings approach to promoting health and wellbeing.
Where We Are Headed
Using a Collective Impact framework (Kania & Kramer, 2011), the USC Well-being Collective remains firmly focused on achieving the four strategic goals to support students to achieve their fullest potential by making the wellbeing of students a strategic priority.
Wellbeing is created in a health promoting campus. This is a shared responsibility. Now, USC is maximizing increased support for health and wellbeing, ensuring that all sectors of the university take affirmative and appropriate action to encourage a safe and health promoting campus.
