Post-Doctoral Research Hire Supporting Quantum Optimization Initiatives, University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering/ Engineering Management is seeking one exceptionally qualified candidate with expertise relevant to quantum computing algorithms to help advance and execute the department’s growing Quantum research portfolio.  Position could be primarily located either at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) campus in Tullahoma, Tennessee or the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Anticipate travel between campuses for collaboration purposes.

The position is available beginning February 1, 2022 or later and requires excellent technical capabilities, strong interpersonal skills to facilitate engagement with a diverse group of collaborators and students, and the ability to execute multiple projects in parallel. Direct experience across one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
•    Variational quantum algorithms
•    Continuous-time quantum walks
•    Combinatorial optimization problems
•    Graph theory

Eligible candidates will have completed a doctorate in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or closely related fields within the last 3 years. Salary is competitive and commensurate with the requirements of the position and the applicant’s experience. Tennessee has no state income tax and a relatively-low cost-of-living.

Desired qualifications: Experience with programming languages, such as Python, is preferred.  The successful candidate will work to determine how classical graph theory techniques can be used to enhance quantum algorithms. 

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK) has thriving research programs in logistics, health innovation, and optimization.  Some faculty and staff in the department are affiliated with the UTK Department of Physics and Astronomy Quantum Entanglement Science and Technology (QUEST) group. Recent progress in quantum optimization research at UTK has been driven by ISE and Physics faculty and staff who are affiliated with QUEST.   Quantum research at the Space Institute will coordinate with the research at the Knoxville campus.
