PhD position on the theory of many-body quantum engines, University of Tübingen

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work on theoretical aspects related to quantum many-body physics. The research will focus in particular on:

  • the investigation of non-equilibrium processes in synthetic quantum matter
  • the development of protocols for novel engine cycles using non-equilibrium phase transitions
  • the application of advanced numerical methods (e.g. tensor networks) to model quantum many-body engines
  • the development of protocols for the implementation of quantum engines within quantum optical systems, such as Rydberg atoms, cavities and trapped ions

The research group ‘Theoretical Atomic Physics and Synthetic Quantum Systems’ (https://uni-tuebingen.de/index.php?id=166449) is embedded in the lively environment of the ‘Center for Quantum Science’ of the University of Tübingen, which includes groups working on cold atoms experiments as well as mathematical and theoretical physics. The successful applicant is expected to actively engage in the activities of the Center.

Candidates need to have a strong background in theoretical physics, a strong academic record, commitment, and a motivation to work hard. They need to be committed to engage and spend extended periods of time in the Condensed Matter Theory group at the University of Nottingham (UK), who is a project partner.

Applications should include a cover letter (including motivation for applying to this position), a CV (including publication list), a copy of the applicant’s master thesis and transcripts (all collated in a single pdf file). Applicants should also arrange for at least one recommendation letter. All documents shall be sent to igor.lesanovsky@uni-tuebingen.de and federico.carollo@uni-tuebingen.de.

The offered position (2/3 E13) will run for at least 3 years. Review of the applications will begin on January 31st 2021 until the position is filled. The position can start as soon as possible.

The position will be funded either through the partnership programme between the Universities of Tübingen and Nottingham or the Elite-program for Postdocs of the Baden-Württemberg foundation.

For enquiries please send an email to Prof. Dr. Igor Lesanovsky (igor.lesanovsky@uni-tuebingen.de) or Dr. Federico Carollo (federico.carollo@uni-tuebingen.de).
