Postdoctoral position in the Theory of Quantum Computing with Trapped Rydberg Ions, Center for Quantum Science, University of Tübingen

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on theoretical aspects related to quantum computing with trapped Rydberg ions. The position is funded through the project ‘Brisk Rydberg Ions for Scalable Quantum Processors’ which is financed by the European Union.

The project goals are the following:

(i) To devise and characterise protocols for fast entangling gates using high-lying (Rydberg) states of trapped ions.

(ii) To engage with international project partners from industry and academia (located in Sweden, Germany, Austria) in order to develop experimentally feasible implementations of quantum information processing, error correction and quantum algorithms that are tailored to the trapped Rydberg ion platform.

The research group ‘Theoretical Atomic Physics and Synthetic Quantum Systems’ (https://uni-tuebingen.de/index.php?id=166449) is embedded in the lively environment of the ‘Center for Quantum Science’ of the University of Tübingen, which includes groups working on cold atoms experiments as well as mathematical and theoretical physics. The successful applicant is expected to actively engage in the activities of this Center.

Candidates need to have a strong background in theoretical physics – especially atomic physics and/or quantum information – a strong academic record and a demonstrable commitment and motivation to work hard.

Applications should include a cover letter (including motivation for applying), a CV (including publication list), a copy of the PhD thesis and transcripts (all collated in a single pdf file). Applicants are expected to arrange for two recommendation letters. All documents – including the recommendation letters – shall be sent to igor.lesanovsky@uni-tuebingen.de.

The offered position (E13) will run for at least 2 years. Review of the applications will begin on March 20th, 2022, until the position is filled. The anticipated starting date is October 2022, but is negotiable.

For enquiries, please send an email to igor.lesanovsky@uni-tuebingen.de.
