From the archive (2015): Hoover-Union TriangleThis community-based project asked MLA+U students to organized a real community design process and ultimately see the culminating design implemented in the local neighborhood. In 2015, Councilman Gilbert Cedillo supported design and construction of the Hoover Triangle at the intersection of Hoover, 23rd and Union Streets, just north of campus. Students worked with community groups and interviewed local organizations and agencies, businesses and institutions to understand primary values and needs. From this original work, they designed a community-design workshop process to ultimately generate a design for the space. The “Hoover Triangle” is a physical result of conflicting street grids coming together at an opportune moment within the city. It is situated at the northern end of University Park just off the 10 freeway, making it ideally situated as a gateway into the evolving community. Once home to Los Angeles’ wealthy elite, the neighborhood contains a large number of notable historic structures. It is now one of the most ethnically diverse parts of Los Angeles. Surrounding the triangle are other community assets that ensure the triangle is well-situated for development into a gathering place and community anchor. Those assets include the 24th Street Theater, which features artistic productions and community arts education, and a number of restaurants that have continued to contribute to the vitality of the street in this area. |
