Assistant Professor of Physics, Experimental Physics, Quantum Computing, Montclair State University

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Physics. Priority will be given to a researcher who can carry out experimental research in quantum information science/quantum computing. Other fields of experimental physics may also be considered, especially atomic, nuclear, or particle physics. The applicant should be able to carry out an externally-funded research program in experimental physics that can involve undergraduate students on the Montclair State campus. Supporting the experimental portion of our curriculum is also expected.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Montclair State University consists of 5 faculty members. Our current research focus is gravitational-wave physics, experimental optics, and fluid mechanics.  In addition to a major and minor in physics, we also offer concentrations in astronomy and pre-medical physics, as well as bachelor’s and master’s options to become state-certificated in physics teaching. The normal teaching load for research-active faculty is 18 credits per year (distributed over two semesters). A typical course varies from 3 credits (lecture-only course) to ~7.2 credits (lecture + two lab sections of introductory physics). New faculty are awarded a start-up package and additional teaching release.


A Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field is required. One or more years of postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Candidates are expected to pursue research that will secure external funding and involve undergraduates. The successful candidate should also have a strong commitment to quality teaching in a broad range of courses at the undergraduate level. We are especially interested in candidates who can support and further develop the experimental physics component of our curriculum.
