Faculty Associate – Research, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California

The Physics Department of the Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for a faculty-associate research position with laboratory experience in atom interferometry, cold atoms and quantum optics.  The candidate must also have experience in laser stabilization, electronics and data acquisition. Exceptional candidates may be considered for appointment at a more senior level.  Applicants must show a history of work in these or closely aligned areas.  The official position title is defined as “Faculty Associate – Research.”

The Physics Department is part of the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which has a long history of excellence in various research areas. The department is now expanding its current areas of research to include atom interferometer sensors. Two active research projects are ongoing in the department.  This position would support existing research programs in atom sensor research.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in applied physics, chemical physics, optical science or optical engineering or related fields;
  • Experience with semi-conductor/diode lasers and amplifiers, Titanium Sapphire lasers, high resolution (high numerical aperture) imaging and fiber optics
  • Experience with circuit design and fabrication, rf electronics, acousto- and electro optic modulators and feedback control
  • Experience in data acquisition and software-hardware integration and feedback controls using LabVIEW as well as design using CAD tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead project efforts and to work with student researchers;
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A Ph.D in applied physics, chemical physics, optical science or optical engineering or related fields
  • Preference given to candidates with hands-on experience in atom interferometry.

Relocation expenses may be authorized for this position. This position may be eligible for telework as we operate in a COVID19 environment and may be eligible for situational telework with the expectation to return to campus work as we switch from the COVID19 virtual environment.
