Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Quantum Information, Northwestern University

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University is seeking outstanding candidates who are excited by the opportunity to help build the future of quantum information at a world-class university. Northwestern is a leading R1 university comprising a number of highly ranked schools that provide extraordinary opportunities for collaboration across a wide range of disciplines. Located in Evanston, on the shores of lake Michigan, just outside the diverse and culturally vibrant city of Chicago, Northwestern offers close proximity and active collaborations with Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab. The Northwestern ECE department nurtures a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture with a dedication to excellence in both research and teaching.

We invite candidates to apply for a tenure-track position as Assistant or Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Applicants must have completed, or will have completed by the start date, a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, and have demonstrated excellence in experimental research within the broad area of quantum information.

Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: quantum communication, quantum computation, and quantum sensing. A candidate with substantial accomplishments in post-graduate research will be considered for appointment as a tenure-track Associate Professor without tenure.

Under exceptional circumstances, a candidate may be considered for appointment as an Associate Professor with tenure; in that case, additional supporting material commensurate with the tenure process at Northwestern University may be required and will be sought separately after initial review of the application and interview with the candidate.

The candidate is typically expected to teach one course per academic quarter, and carry out robust research activities. In addition, the candidate is expected to serve on various departmental committees as a member of the faculty.

Ideally, the start date would be September 1, 2022.  However, the start date is negotiable under unusual circumstances.

Applicants must apply online and upload the following mandatory materials:

  • A cover letter
  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • Contact information for five reference letters
  • A statement of research plan
  • A statement of teaching philosophy

In addition, applicants are encouraged, but not required, to upload the following materials as separate pdf files:

  • Diversity Statement: A statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to enhancing diversity, equity, and/or inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service.
  • Teaching Recommendation Letter: An additional letter of recommendation that specifically addresses demonstrated or potential ability for effective classroom instruction.
