This past year witnessed a significant expansion of the capabilities and facilities of the only NAEC-certified program for children with epilepsy in Central California. The facilities upgrades include a new EMU slated for completion in December 2019. There has been a significant expansion of epilepsy surgeries, including functional hemispherectomy, corpus callosotomies, lobectomies, lesionectomies, and ablations. Numerous VNS placed, of course. Interictal PET studies have are possible through C-Care in Fresno, while ictal-SPECT is available on site. The surgical program now offers stereotactic EEG and Rosa Robot program. In the near future, Valley Children’s will initiate the Neuropace RNS programs. As the only pediatric epileptologist in Central CA, Dr. Cesar Santos is actively recruiting an additional epileptologist to accommodate the clinical volumes. In the interim, Valley Children’s has added two new neurologists to start in June/ July 2020 and is expanding the staff of certified EEG techs in preparation for the opening of the new EMU. To optimize the impact of the new facilities, the team is conducting a survey of families’ needs with regard to the EMU and connecting more with the epilepsy community. This will lead to the creation of an epilepsy support network for the Central Valley. Finally, the Valley Children’s Program achieved NAEC Level-4 designation in 2019.
