Research assistantships are available to all undergraduate and graduate USC students. Qualified students from other institutions, including high school students and recent graduates, are also welcome to apply.  Assistantships are available as part of an HP 290 or 490 Directed Research Course or can be done on a volunteer basis. Research assistants work on the development of public health training materials, organization of public health awareness raising events, and community-based research studies.

GRIT volunteers are encouraged to participate in experiential learning opportunities offered through the lab, including research and program implementation trips to Uganda.

Research assistantships are a great way to gain initial exposure to innovative, collaborative research in preparation for medical school, graduate school, and jobs in global health. GRIT alumni have gone on to graduate school at some of the leading institutions and programs in the nation and obtained positions in leading public health agencies, including WHO, CDC, USAID, International Medical Corps, and Aids Healthcare Foundation.

We prioritize assistantships to students who are interested in committing to:

  • Two consecutive semesters of volunteering
  • 10 hours of volunteering per week
  • Weekly lab meeting on Thursdays at 8:00 am

At GRIT, research assistants have the opportunity to specialize in one of the lab’s two main areas of work: Program Implementation and Outreach and Research Study Design and Data Analysis. To get a better understanding of our activities, please check out Our Work and read some of our publications.
