GRIT Lab investigators have partnered with Ray United FC and Makerere University in implementing annual soccer and health camps in Uganda since 2016. Each year, the camp provides public health and soccer training to approximately 1,000 students (equal distribution of girls and boys aged 11-18). Past camps have been hosted in Mpigi, Oyam, and Dokolo Uganda.
Soccer training is provided by professional Ugandan soccer coaches, while GRIT Lab partners with students from Makerere University to develop and deliver the public health curriculum. The public health curriculum focuses on sexual and reproductive health (based largely on the proven Grassroots Soccer curriculum), sanitation and menstrual health, risky behaviors (including tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and violence), and mental health. GRIT volunteers who participate in the delivery of the curriculum on site are professionally trained in youth facilitation.
