Drowning is a major public health problem throughout East Africa, including Uganda. Approximately 5,000 Ugandans drown annually. Nearly all of these deaths are preventable.
GRIT Lab has partnered with Swim Safe Uganda, a major national leader in drowning prevention in Uganda, on evaluating current capacity to prevent drowning within waterside communities in Uganda.
The first community assessment is took place in a district on the shores of Lake Victoria. The results of this pilot study and research capacity building exercise will be used to advocate for greater resources and attention towards drowning prevention activities throughout the country.
