HEAL Programs
ART & MEDICINE
Hoyt Gallery, located in the basement of the Keith Administration Building, has exhibited the work of artist-patients, students, faculty, and staff for nearly fifteen years. Curated by KSOM’s Artist-in Residence, Ted Meyer, the Gallery continues the HEAL Program’s new mission to align the work of patients/artists with the core medical school curriculum, and to foster enhanced understanding between patients and future health care professionals. Beginning in Fall 2016, the exhibits have been tied to the KSOM curriculum as part of the Humanities, Ethics/Economics, Art, and Law (HEAL) Program.
MUSIC & MEDICINE
The Music & Medicine Program is an integral part of the HEAL curriculum and provides students and staff with the opportunity to become more involved in music creation. This program hosts shows and other music-related events to celebrate its member’s musical creations and performances. In April 2023, we hosted our first annual Zora Mihailovich Concert, in honor of our late Musician-In-Residence. During this event, our students, faculty, and staff celebrated Zora’s legacy through performances.
LUNCH & LEARN
The Lunch and Learn Series is an initiative of the HEAL Program, in which scholars in the humanities, social sciences, film, theater, and law will inform our collective understanding of the health of individuals, communities, and societies.
NARRATIVE MEDICINE WORKSHOPS
The HEAL Program is offering Narrative Medicine workshops led by Dr. Erika Wright, Clinical Instructor of Family Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine. These 2-hour sessions are designed to introduce students and faculty to the tenets of Narrative Medicine, specifically the practice of close reading, and to provide a space for participants to think about how words/language evolves over time and within a given context or moment. Participants will further develop strategies for connecting and collaborating with their patients and colleagues through effective listening and analytical thinking.
